Course Description
Philosophy 202H
(co-convened with Philosophy/Math 202; extra session for Honors students)
This introductory course in formal logic will have two main themes: the concept of a formal system, and the relationship between syntactic and sematic systems. Topics covered will include translation into symbolic languages, derivations in propositional and predicate logic, metatheory, identity, and definite decriptions.
Pre-law students should note that logic courses have proven beneficial for those sitting the LSATs.
There will be three midterms (40%), a cumulative final (60%), and occasional quizzes (10%) to help students measure their progress. A computer program will be available to assist in the construction of derivations.
