Daily Schedule


This is the general course schedule for both SRI and McNair.  These schedules are subject to change and may differ slightly by program.. Please check the web page for updates.

WEEK ONE:
6/6: Introductions to course, department policies and each other
To do for next class: Schedule an appointment with your Mentor or other resource to interview him/her. Come to class with your interviewee's name, job title, organizational affiliation, and interview date, time, and location. Review Interviewing Strategies link on web site.

6/8: Discuss grading procedures; Introduce Research Proposal Project; Interview technique discussion; proposal sign-up.
To do for next class: Review Research Methods and Proposals; post to the listserv (following the e-mail protocols)

WEEK TWO:
6/13:  Class discussion on research tools and methods.  Break into discussion groups to discuss methods appropriate to your discipline.
To do for next class: Complete your interview.  Draft the first two pages of your Research Proposal.  Be sure to integrate your interview material where appropriate.  Review Planning and Presenting Oral Reports link on web site.

6/15:  Class discussion on oral reporting strategies and techniques.
For Next Class: Complete a draft of your Research Proposal.  Bring copies or disks to workshop.

WEEK THREE:
6/20:  In class: we'll workshop each other's drafts.
To do for next class:  Prepare a five minute presentation of your Research Proposal.

6/22: In Class: Presentations of Research Proposal Drafts in small groups.
To Do For Next Class: Complete written Research Proposal Drafts.  Review "Compiling an Annotated Bibliography" link on web site.

WEEK FOUR:
6/27:  In Class:  Submit Research Proposal Drafts. We'll discuss the Annotated Bibliography.  Be ready to identify and review the style guide that is appropriate for your research area.  Style Guides are listed on web site.   We'll use this class period to begin identifying sources.
To do for next class: Complete a draft of your bibliography, annotate at east two of the sources.

6/29: Class discussion on generating a revision of Research Proposal.  Discuss the Annotated Bibliography.
To do for next class: Complete Annotated Bibliography. Review readings under Techniques and Conventions for Writing Research Report link on web site.  Follow the appropriate link to read about they type of research you will conduct.  Give yourself plenty of time.

WEEK FIVE:
7/4: No Class- Happy July 4

7/6: In Class: Submit completed Annotated Bibliography/Literature Review.  We'll discuss the composition and rhetoric of research reports in class.  Bring any questions or comments on the readings that you may have.
For Next Class: Submit Revised Research Proposal.  Begin drafting the Research Report.

WEEK SIX
7/11:  In Class:  Submit Revised Research Proposal.  Small group writing/drafting activities.
For Next Class: Schedule an appointment with your Research Mentor and have them review your proposal.  Write up a follow-up report and bring your draft and this report with you to class. Continue writing on your individual projects.  Bring any questions that you may have regarding your project.

7/13:In Class:  Discuss progress of Research Reports.  Distribute your paper to your group members.  Review peer review guidelines in class and group.  Sign up for your review partner.
For Next Class: Generate your peer review

WEEK SEVEN:
7/18:  In Class:  In peer review groups discuss each other's drafts and submit written reports.
FOR NEXT CLASS:  Revise your research project based on peer feedback.

7/20: In class: Submit Research Project drafts.  Sign up for individual conferences next week.  Discuss editing and proofreading strategies.
FOR NEXT CLASS:  Review your research project, noting places you feel need work.  Be prepared to discuss those places in your conferences with your writing advisor.

Presentation Practice and Individual Conferences will differ according to individual instructor schedules.  Below follows a general outline.  See your instructor for specifics.

WEEK EIGHT:
7/25:  No Class: Research Project Conferences held in Writing Advisor's office

7/27: No Class: Research Project Conferences held in Writing Advisor's office
 

WEEK NINE:
8/1:  No Class: Research Project Conferences held in Writing Advisor's office
8/03:  Practice Presentations (times to be announced)
