design

My freelance web work. Much of what I do on my own time parallels my day job: build backend systems for websites that handle content management, custom groupware systems, or project management. Sometimes, a web page is just a web page, but the stuff I seem to be good at revolves around the little extras that turn web sites into tools, that take sites beyond the brochure, or that add an extra bit of fun. I use editors from time to time, but I generally write the HTML, PHP, and CSS generating these sites by hand (in BBEdit). The data-driven things are usually driven by MySQL. I've also done lots of work in FileMaker Pro and NetCloak. Some of my recent work:

Apocalypso. I'm quite proud of this one. The design is horizontal, with several random elements and some experiments in CSS that paid off nicely. Lots of backend (Apoc members-only) stuff going on behind the scenes that let the band do the page editing and maintenance. UASteel. The University of Arizona Steel Band program. I applied much of the experience gained writing the Apoc site to this one: members-only backend, calendars, a few CSS experiments just for fun.
Binary Consulting, Inc. A great company, pretty simple site, which needed a clean, straight-forward look and transparent functionality.
Kaye Barlow. An incredibly talented singer. The web site is blog-based (WordPress) and was given to Kaye as a birthday present. Needs a little attention when the two of us have time.   Robin Horn. Fantastic drummer and Artist-In-Residence at the University of Arizona School of Music and Dance. Another pretty simple site with some fun throw-back design elements. One of Robin's real strengths is jazz, but his forte is electronic percussion, which makes for a funky retro+modern mix, which is reflected in the design.

Since much of the work I've done is so far on the inside of a site, I can't really post an image or link to it all. I've subcontracted as a backend developer for systems like project pipeline management for an architectural firm, online submission of job applications for a game design company, a musical term audio glossary for percussion terms in foreign languages, and coding for an art installation based on user-directed storytelling and randomly-generated CSS. It's all buried inside business intranets, stand-alone installations, or behind passwords, so you'll just have to take my word for it, I suppose.

My non-web freelance life. I seem to do lots of CD covers and liner note work: a couple for bands I'm in, several for a Tucson elementary & middle school steel band program, a couple for a local accordion artist, one for my very own, very talented sister, to name a few. I'll be adding some images of that work in the coming days.
