What employers are Looking for and How To Make Yourself an Indespensible Employee

1. Computer Literacy
 Know the basics of computers, hopefully by using one both at work and at home. Understand word processing, e-mail, and database management. Be familiar wtih various kinds of software such as WIndows. Become enough of an expert so that other call on you for help.
2. Communications
 The ability to give a good oral report is an asset, better yet if you know how to weave graphics into  your presentation. Skill in writing good letters, memos, and reports is important.
3. Teamwork
 Know how to work as a member of a team but be ready at any time to step up and direct an operation if the situation arises. Cooperativeness within the organization is critical.
4. Work related experience
 Any career related experience will help in landing a job. Employers want to know you have some experience in the field and know what a job will entail.
5. GPAís
 Although not always the most important factor, GPAís still play a role in even being selected for an interview. Our on campus interviewing program sometimes uses a 3.0 GPA to determine if you can even schedule an interview with a company recruiter. A broad range of experience and being well rounded, however, is also critical. So......keep those grades up!!
6. Extracurricular activities
 Any community service, or leadership roles you have assumed will be looked upon favorably.  Also,try and get involved in organizations, join clubs or subscribe to magazines that will help expose you to opportunities in your field and keep you current.
7. Understand the Big Picture
 Know what you can bring to an organization and how the work you would do fits into the total activities of your organization. It will help to make your work more interesting and may make it more effective.
8. Diversity
 Be receptive to persons from other cultural backgrounds. A knowledge of a foreign language, such as Spanish, Russian or Japanese is a real plus.
9. Work Ethic
 Arrive a few minutes early and stay a few minutes late and work steadily all day long. donít treat your office as a dating bureau or a rest area.
10. Volunteer/Take initiative
 Be ready to ask for more assignments or to tackle tough problems that no one else finds time for. Subtly make sure that your attitude and motivation becomes known to superiors.
