Notes:

** In a power of attorney document found in the Bledsoe County, TN archives, Evander M. Smith grants an Alexander Montgomery power of attorney to act on his behalf relating to the land his father, Samuel Smith, who died in 1820,  left him.  This was a great find that lists the father of Evander, Samuel Smith as well as his death in Bledsoe County in 1820 in the document.

** In the Tennessee Supreme Court case 'Smith vs. Evans' it lists Samuel Smith, as well as his three sons: John, William, and Evander.  Samuel Smith owned 323 acres of land in Bledsoe County, and died in 1820. (See Google Books:  Reports of Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of Tennessee During the Years 1844-5)

* Evander McKeever Smith has numerous land and property deals in Bledsoe County, TN which I will list here soon. 

Evander McKeever Smith – appears on the 1860 Overton County, TN Census (21st of July, 1860), page 275 – Shows up as E. M. Smith, age 39 – Cabinet Maker, Place of Birth: Tennessee.  This Census shows him living with: Sarah A. – 26 F, Benjamin J. - 18 M, Samuel L. or S. – 15 M, Millie – 12 F, John W. – 3 M, and Mary 6 months F.

Evander also shows up on the 1850 Clinton County, KY Census as Evander M. Smith – 31 M – cabinetmaker, TN.  Also showing up in this census are Abigal, 27 F - KY, Virginia T. 9 F – KY, Benjamin J. 7 M – KY, Samuel S. 5 M – KY, Milly C. 1 F – KY.

Evander Also shows up on the 1840 Clinton County, KY Census as E. M. Smith.  Also on this census is shown the members of the family by age and gender, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 15-20. 

A note of interest: Benjamin and Isaac Story also appear on the 1840 & 1850 Clinton County, KY Census.  Prior to being married to Sarah Wallace, Evander was married to Abigal Story.  It appears that he followed the Story family from Bledsoe County, TN to Clinton County, KY where Evander must have lived for over a decade, before showing up in Overton County, TN with a new wife.   

Obvious discrepancies: The age of Evander varies from Census to census, which is why there are three years listed for his birth year. 

There are many Evander McKeevers listed during this timeframe in the South.  It is sometimes spelled McKever, or McIver, although I understand even with this spelling it is pronounced McKeever.  Some of the Others found are Evander McKever Raulston, Evander McIver Betts, Evander McKeever Kilgore, Evander McIver Law, a General Evander Roderick McIver, and even a few plain Evander McIvers.  While I find it interesting that there are so many, I have yet to find a solid connection to my Evander.

Smith family legend says that these Smiths are Scots-Irish.
