Notes:

** In a power of attorney document found in the Bledsoe County, TN archives, Evander M. Smith grants an Alexander Montgomery power of attorney to act on his behalf relating to the land his father, Samuel Smith, who died in 1820,  left him.  This was a great find that lists the father of Evander, Samuel Smith as well as his death in Bledsoe County in 1820 in the document.

** In the Tennessee Supreme Court case 'Smith vs. Evans' it lists Samuel Smith, as well as his three sons: John, William, and Evander.  Samuel Smith owned 323 acres of land in Bledsoe County, and died in 1820. Samuel Terry is listed as the executor of the will (later taken over by his son Scot Terry). (See Google Books:  Reports of Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of Tennessee During the Years 1844-5)

-The birth years of the above three brothers are calculated from the Tennessee Supreme Court case Smith vs. Evans which says that John was the eldest and came of age (21) in 1828, and Evander coming of age in 1839.  It refers to John and William as Evander's older brothers.

-There seem to be long gaps between the birth years of these brothers, leading me to wonder if there were sisters (not listed) as well.

The fact that Samuel Smith died in Bledsoe County in 1820, and the fact that there are no other entries after 1819 lead me to believe that this may be our Samuel Smith.

In Bledsoe County Deed Book C, page 215, 2 April 1819, Samuel Smith is listed as a commissioner of the town of Pikeville, along with Isaac Stephens, Reubin Brown, John Bridgman, Eli Thurman, and Aaron Schoolfield. (information from an email from Ann Acuff, Thanks Ann!)
