CLASS SCHEDULE ASSIGNMENTS

INSTRUCTOR Ann Parker, M.A.  Messages can be left at 626-0622 during the week; my e-mail address is aparker@email.arizona.edu. I am available for consultations before and after class.

MEETINGS DAYS AND TIMES:  Fridays, 5:30 – 9:30 pm; Saturdays, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Literary and artistic works of American Indians and Asian, Black, and Hispanic Americans, both men and women.  Includes traditional and modern works and contributions to American civilization.

COURSE PURPOSE:  To introduce students to the rich and varied cultures that make up the United States of America.  To learn about different cultures through literature, art, music, film, and traditions.

MY EXPECTATIONS:  I expect you to be an active learner.  Active learners take responsibility for their learning process.  Active learners attend class regularly, come to class on time and prepared, complete homework assignments, and turn assignments in promptly.  I am here to help you learn about the Humanities through an intercultural perspective; however, I cannot teach you adequately unless you help me by being an active learner.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Learning in this class is an active process; you will be teaching others in the class as you are learning from others.  Therefore, it is impossible for you to learn if you do not attend class.  Five points will be dropped from your total grade for every four hours of class you miss.  I understand that emergencies may sometimes come up that prevent you from attending class; however, it is your responsibility not to schedule appointments during class time.  Whenever possible, please inform me beforehand if you will not be attending class.  Some assignments will be completed during class time; if you miss a class, you are still responsible for the assignment.  Assignments turned in late will have points deducted.

LAST DAY OF CLASS:  The last day of class is Saturday, April 14, 2001.

ASSIGNMENTS:  Students will be required to write an essay entitled “What Culture Means to Me”; a biography; a book review; reactions to movies we view in class and a cultural event; and make a presentation on cultural music or art in class.  For complete descriptions of course assignments, please see the attached sheet.

PAPER FORMAT:  Papers must be typed using double-spacing.  Handwritten papers will be returned to the student to be typed and will be considered late.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS will be accepted up to one week after the original assignment was due and will have points deducted.  Late papers will not be accepted after one week unless you have spoken with me beforehand.  All papers are due in class on Saturday, April 14 (last day of class).

TEXT:  The required text for this class is Braided Lives: An Anthology of Multicultural American Writing, by the Minnesota Humanities Commission Staff (Editor), September, 1991

GRADING:  See the list of assignments for grading information.

GRADES OF “W”, “Y”, or “I”:  Withdrawals (“W”) must be completed by the student.  A “Y” grade (instructor withdrawal) must be requested in writing to me by Friday, April 13.
I do not give incomplete grades (“I”).

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT:  It is expected that you adhere to the Pima Community College Student Code of Conduct at all times.  A copy of this code can be found in the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook.  Specifically for this class, you are expected to complete and turn in your own assignments, unless the assignment requires that you work with a group.

PLAGIARISM:  Plagiarism, either of your classmates’ ideas or the ideas of an author or other source, will result in a failing grade.

Printing material verbatim or by paraphrasing from a Web Page on the Internet is considered plagiarism.  If you use information from a web page for a paper, you must submit a copy of the web page with the information you utilized.  Papers with information copied word for word or paraphrased from a web page without acknowledging the source or without proper reference citations will be returned for rewriting.

ADA COMPLIANCE:  If you have a disability that requires special accommodation, you are strongly urged to notify me (the instructor) at the beginning of the class so that reasonable accommodations can be made in a timely manner.
