Dissertation
“La sexualidad como estrategia subversiva en los personajes de dos novelas de la dictadura: La fiesta del Chivo y En el tiempo de las mariposas
Director: Professor Eliana Rivero
Date of Completion: May 2009.

My dissertation is entitled “La sexualidad femenina como estrategia subversiva en los personajes de la nueva novela histórica: La fiesta del Chivo y En el tiempo de las mariposas”. In it I reevaluate the female experience during the period of the Dominican Republic’s dictatorship (1930-1961), as portrayed in the novels by Mario Vargas Llosa and Julia Álvarez. Although a considerable corpus of scholarship exists on both texts, I seek to fill a gap in the existing criticism on those two novels. Such criticism has been done, in part, based on feminist and contemporary literary theory, where mostly emphasizing the magnitude of the violence wielded on women. What has been missing in these studies is a broad interdisciplinary approach to access the presence of the female narrator that expresses her particular vision and experience of Trujillo’s dictatorship. I am proposing a re-examination of the female characters in La fiesta del Chivo (2000) and En el tiempo de las mariposas (1994) that sheds light upon the textual strategies used in order to subvert the patriarchal status quo, by means of the female character’s expressed point of view. Chapter 1 functions as an introduction outlining the evolution of the Neohistorical Novel and the way this sub genre has privileged the female vision, contrary to the traditional Historical Novel. Chapter 2 constitutes an analysis of La fiesta del Chivo, written by the well known Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa, and focuses specifically on the mechanisms used by the narrator to express his ideological message and how the female character reinforces this message. In Chapter 3 this same methodology is used in the analysis of the novel En el tiempo de las mariposas by the US Latina author Julia Álvarez. Chapter 4 focuses on popular culture elements including movies and music, which can serve as a means to demonstrate the adverse social structures and practices established under Trujillo’s military rule in Dominicans’ everyday life.
