Password Guidelines

Modified: May 23 2002
Here are guidelines for picking a password. Some of these items are mandated by the Password program; some are simply recommendations for the sake of security.
Cannot resemble a dictionary word
Must have a minimum of 8 characters
Don't base it on your name or other information which someone could guess about you
Should have both uppercase and lowercase letters
Should have both numbers and letters (for example, you could replace a letter with a number)
Use caution with the number zero (looks like letter "oh") and number one (looks like lowercase "el")
Some systems require that your password change every 3-6 months; even if it's not required, change your password regularly
Finally, don't choose something that would embarrass you if you had to give your password to an instructor or technical support

If you forget or corrupt your password, you can set a new one using the UA NetID system. Note: changing your password changes it on all UITS systems (UA email, U-System, Super, etc.).
