Emacs Editor Usage

Modified: May 22 2002
  • First take a look a the man page for emacs
  • Emacs is a powerful editor that can be used in graphics mode (windows) or in text mode. Most of the nice features of emacs are used in graphical mode.
  • Text mode:
      emacs -nw file_name
  • Graphical mode:
  • Set your DISPLAY variable.
  • Type
      emacs
  • Most of the commands need a sequence of at least two keys: e.g., ctl_x, ctl_f will open a file.
  • The name of the file can be typed at the command line on the bottom of your screen.
  • An extremely useful command invokes the tutorial which describes most of the emacs commands:
      ctl_h t
  • To exit emacs use the sequence:
      ctl_x ctl_c
