SSH - the Secure Shell

Revised June 6 2007
SSH is the required way to connect with the U-System. SSH uses encryption to prevent eavesdroppers from reading information, such as your password, from the network. All SSH-type software allows for secure communication, replacing the vulnerable utilities like telnet, rlogin, ftp and rcp. You can find free SSH software at the following places:
  • Web:
A web-based SSH client can be accessed at http://u.arizona.edu. It requires Java support in your browser but it allows secure connection and file transport to u.arizona.edu without having to download extra software.
  • Windows:
    1. PuTTY a link for the download can be found on the Sitelicense page. This new version uses SSH v.2 as default.
    2. WinSCP for file transfers. Also found on the Sitelicense page.
  • Macintosh:
    1. Mac OS X Comes with command-line SSH included to issue comands and transfer files.
  • Unix/Linux:
    1. OpenSSH Preferred.
      or
    2. SSH for UNIX

We support only the SSH V2 protocol.
