In this survey of Milton's writings, we will attempt to understand his work within the larger seventeenth-century discussions about literature, politics, religion, and society. Readings will include a selection of Milton's sonnets and early poems, Comus, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes, as well as a wide range of scholarship on Milton's work and the seventeenth century.
In completing course assignments, you will sharpen your critical thinking, reading, and writing and research skills. Many course readings are available online; you will need to consult those readings and to check your email (at least once a week). You will be assigned to a learning group, and you will undertake regular in-class assignments and activities with members of your group.
