SSH
for Windows XP has a bug when uploading
files.
This webpage describes the steps you need to take to install and configure
the site-licensed version of SSH for Windows. W3 users should
substitute the W3 host and their W3 logins where the U-System and
NetID are used in these instructions.
- You may want to print these instructions before you begin the download
process.
- Download the site-licensed version of SSH
for Windows.
- If necessary, close or minimize your browser and use Windows Explorer
Search/Find to find the folder where SSHWin was downloaded.
- Double-click SSHWinClient....exe which will automatically
"extract" the files.
- Follow the InstallShield Wizard's instructions
- It is usually best to use the installation defaults.
- Click Next to proceed through the installation.
- The InstallShield Wizard sets up 2 shortcuts on your desktop.
 |
SSH Secure Shell Client is for computing
within your Unix account on u.arizona.edu. |
|
 |
SSH File Transfer Client is for secure file
copies to and from your account. |
SSH is now installed and you need to set it up to talk with the U-System.
To configure SSH you could use the SSH Secure Shell shortcut or
the SSH File Transfer shortcut, but we'll use the computing
shortcut because it is the most useful.
- Double-click the SSH Secure Shell Client desktop shortcut.

- Under the Profiles pulldown select Add Profile.
- In the Add Profile window that opens over-type Profile Name
with a name for this SSH connection which will identify the host to
which you're connecting, like u-sys, in this example.
- Move your mouse to the right and click Add Current Connection to
Profiles.
- Under the Profiles pulldown select Edit Profiles.
- You will see the profile you just added.
- Highlight your profile.
- (If you make a mistake and want to delete a profile or give it a more
descriptive name, right-click the profile in this window and you will
be given the delete and rename options.)
- Click the Connection tab if that window isn't already in front.
- As in the example below:
- Set Host Name to u.arizona.edu (W3
users set w3.arizona.edu).
- Set User Name to your UA NetID.
- For Authentication Methods and other settings the defaults are
fine.
- Click OK.
- Back at the SSH Secure Shell window click the button Quick
Connect.
- A window appears with the Connection information you just set up.
(If your configuration does not appear in this box, see Another method
below.)
- Click the Connect button.
- Enter your Password in the box that appears.
- Another method you have for connecting is to use the Profiles
pulldown again and, instead of Add or Edit, just highlight
the profile you want to use and SSH will try to connect.
- So...you are now logged in to the U-System.
- The Shell interface mode has a Unix prompt that might look
like this:
- The Menu interface mode looks like this:
- If you need to define shortcuts to other computers which require
SSH for connecting, use the Profiles pulldown and select Add
Profile.
Using SSH
Not only can you have multiple remote hosts defined to SSH,
you can have multiple sessions for computing and file transfer
running simultaneously to multiple hosts.
