Converting from Menu to Shell Interface

Revised July 2 2003
This webpage details how to convert your U-System use from a Menu-based interface to a Shell-based interface.
  • Login to u.arizona.edu using SSH software or the web-based version of SSH if you have a PC
  • Choose M for Menu
  • Under Menu, select Misc
  • Select Shell (the last option on the list)
  • Type your password
  • From the list of shells you're given, type one
(/bin/tcsh is the default and one of the simpler ones)

Wait a several minutes, then log into u.arizona.edu again and you should then have a Shell-based interface (tcsh).

Converting from Shell to Menu Interface

  • Temporarily - while you are using Shell mode, enter the command menu and you'll be presented with a Menu interface. You'll need to log out and back in again to return to Shell mode.
  • Permanently - type /usr/local/bin/chsh at the command prompt. Log out and, after about 5 minutes, when you log in you will have a Menu interface.
