Macintosh Software for
Secure Connections and File Transfers

Revised Nov 12 2004
Secure Shell ("SSH") software is required to access u.arizona.edu and other systems at UA. Free downloads of the software are available...
  • for Macs, PCs, and Unix workstations at UA's SSH homepage,
  • for PCs with detailed setup, usage and tunneling instructions,
  • within these webpages for Macintoshes.

There are several ways to connect and transfer files to and from the U-System. Each method's user-friendliness and shortcomings are noted where relevant. MacSSH and NiftyTelnet are free OS 9 SSH applications. Their use with OS 9 is documented below and they are reported to work with OS X also.

Mac OS X comes with SSH as part of its operating system but you must use OS X's Unix interface to take advantage of some of it.

To use graphical applications like Fetch, GoLive, and older versions of Dreamweaver (4 and MX) you will need to tunnel your file transport through SSH. For Mac OS X Fugu, below, is an easy, secure, free alternative to Fetch. DreamweaverMX 2004 (OS 10.2.6) uses SFTP.

Mac OS X - OS X comes with SSH automatically included.
No installation (except OS X) needed.
