Revised Jan 10 2003
This webpage is part of the Macintosh SSH documentation. Other
pages document other methods for secure connection and file transport
for Macs. This page details NiftyTelnet's use in computing and
file transport (using SCP - Secure Copy) and is organized by:
- system requirements
- software installation and setup steps (download
links are included where appropriate)
- usage instructions (steps for connection
and file transfer)
NiftyTelnet Requirements
- NiftyTelnet-1.1-ssh-r3 requires 950KB
- Reported to run on any Mac OS
- No browser required (other than for reading this and downloading
software)
- File transport implemented via SCP rather than FTP/Fetch
NiftyTelnet Software Installation
- Download NiftyTelnet
- Nifty should automatically expand
-

the NiftyTelnet Installer icon to install it

the NiftyTelnet folder to open it (there should be 5 items)
the NiftyTelnet
1.1 SSH r3 application icon to highlight it
- under File go to Make Alias
- drag the new alias to your desktop (or Launcher) since you may
be using it often
- Start the NiftyTelnet application by

the alias
- You need to configure a connection Shortcut under NiftyTelnet to simplify
the process, so, under Shortcuts, select Edit Shortcuts,
then New
(or, if a New Connection window is open,
New to make a Telnet Shortcut)
- give your shortcut a name, u-cluster in this instance
- set the Host Name to u.arizona.edu
- for Protocol select SSH - Blowfish
3DES is the most secure of these options, but it is slower
than Blowfish
- for User Name enter your U-System user ID (your NetID)
- the default terminal emulation setting, VT102, is fine
OK

NiftyTelnet Usage
These directions assume you already have done the above to set up a
configuration for and connection to u.arizona.edu.
- Under File, select New Connection
- In the New Connection window you will now see your u-cluster
shortcut; highlight it and
Connect

- The first time you connect you will get this Host Alert warning.
Accept & Save

- In an SSH Login window your U-System NetID should be
displayed (from your shortcut)
- enter your password
Login
- At this point you should be logged into the U-System
(Shell interface mode is illustrated here; if Menu
mode is your default,
enter M to start the Menu interface.)

- To transmit files, under File go to New Connection
again, but select Scp (Secure copy) this time

- The Copy window has a toggle to Send/Receive files,
with Receive transmitting files TO your Mac

NiftyTelnet Send to the U-System
- To send a file to the U-System
- toggle the Send Files/Folders switch
Add File/Folder
to hop around the Desktop to find the file(s)
- set the name of the folder or file on the U-System in the
Destination Path
Start Copy (you
may be prompted for your NetID and Password again)

NiftyTelnet Receive to Your Mac
- When receiving a file (from the U-System), you
must be explicit and enter the names of your Source Files.
(You have a U-System compute session open so you
can use it to list your file names, however, you cannot have both
windows active at the same time so cancel the Copy window
if you need to list first. To list your files in
Menu mode choose File then DirEdit.)

- You can choose the Download Folder (destination) on your
Mac by clicking a Pick Folder button or by clicking your
way around folders displayed in the Pick Download Folder
window

- Once you have defined your source and destination
files or folders,
Start Copy (you
may be prompted for your NetID and Password again)
- If you stored a webpage, verify that the public can view it by trying
to view it yourself with a browser. If you get a "Forbidden"
error, you need to change the permissions
to make your pages viewable on the web
- When you've finished copying and computing, exit the
U-System session and then quit the NiftyTelnet application
