Fetch icon Secure Fetch Installation & Setup

Revised Jan 8 2003

This webpage is part of the Macintosh SSH documentation. It details how to install and configure Fetch which is used for secure file transport with SSH, MacSSH and MindTerm. Fetch must tunnel through your SSH client connection to a server protected by SSH. If you set up a configuration "shortcut," there's a better guarantee you'll get a successful connection each time.

Fetch Installation

  • Fetch 4 requires about 2.5MB
  • Download Site-licensed Fetch here
  • Click to Accept the terms of the license
  • Click yes to create a Fetch directory
  • You may want to make a desktop Fetch alias
  • Fetch 4 works with Mac OS 9 and OS X
    • Steps for configuring and using Fetch under OS 9 are directly below
    • The steps for configuring and using Fetch under OS X are in a separate webpage

OS 9 - Fetch Software Configuration

  • Start Fetch
  • Under Customize select New Shortcut to define and save your file-transport configuration for Fetch
    • In the Shortcut/Bookmark Editor window (depending on which version of Fetch you're using) call it ftp tunnel
(with MacSSH you'll use this name again when you set up a path later for Fetch to use through MacSSH)
    • for Type choose Unknown from the pulldown
    • set Host to 127.0.0.1 (your local host address is 127.0.0.1)
    • set User ID to your U-System user ID
    • do not enter (store) your Password; you'll be prompted for it later when you log in
    • if you are doing webpage development, set Directory to public_html
    • click OK

         Fetch bookmark
  • Under Customize choose Preferences
  • Under the General tab (this window varies with Fetch versions) in the Default Shortcut pulldown select your ftp tunnel configuration so that anytime you make a connection it will automatically be set up with these internal host and port numbers and your user ID

         Fetch tunnel preference

  • Under the Firewall tab (this window varies with Fetch versions) check Use passive mode transfers (PASV)
  • Click OK

         Fetch PASV

  • If you need to edit your Fetch shortcuts later, use the Windows pulldown, select Fetch Shortcuts; then, under Customize, choose Edit
  • Use your browser's back key to return to the webpage to continue your security software installation.
