1976 Behavioral Archeology. Academic Press. This was out print for many years, but in 2002 was reprinted, with a long-winded prologue, by Percheron Press.

1982 (senior author, W.L. Rathje) Archaeology. Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. Out of print, but perhaps one day will be revised and reissued. (When pigs fly)

1987 Formation Processes of the Archaeological Record. University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque. This book went out of print in 1995 but is now available as a handsome and inexpensive paperback, published in 1996, by the University of Utah Press, Salt Lake City.

1991 The Portable Radio in American Life. University of Arizona Press, Tucson. The hardback is out of print, though copies are still floating around. However, an inexpensive paperback is available.

1992 Technological Perspectives on Behavioral Change. University of Arizona Press, Tucson. This book is available as an inexpensive hardback. I refer to it as my "ugly little grey book."

1995 (editor) Behavioral Archaeology: First Principles. University of Utah Press, Salt Lake City. This book reprints a selection of my writings on behavioral archaeology from 1972 to 1987. The hardback is out of print, but an inexpensive paper edition is available.

1994 (with Tamara C. Butts, and Kimberly K. Grimm) Taking Charge: The Electric Automobile in America. Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington DC. This book, available since 2003 in an inexpensive paperback edition, won the 1995 Cugnot Award of Distinction from the Society of Automotive Historians. It was also nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

1999 (with Andrea Miller) The Material Life of Human Beings: Artifacts, Behavior, and Communication. Routledge, London. This book is available in hardback and inexpensive paper editions.

2000 (editor) Social Theory in Archaeology. University of Utah Press, Salt Lake City. Published in hardback and inexpensive paper editions.
