To help you in this task, check
the "Program Participant Locator."
Please note that longstanding WRSA
tradition and policy is that all paper presenters may also be assigned
chair and/or discussant duties.
The Program Cochairs have attempted
to select persons with appropriate skills and interests to discuss each
paper, given the very limited number of "degrees of freedom" imposed by
scheduling constraints. Even if you do not consider yourself the
ideal discussant for a paper, rest assured that the most interesting
suggestions frequently come from persons with different perspectives than
those of the author. The Program Cochairs consider the program included
here to be "final" with respect to scheduling papers, and will resist making
changes. They've attempted to honor all scheduling requests received prior
to December 1. Any further program changes must be kept to
a minimum due to the fullness of the program and the need not to inconvenience
others by making last-minute swaps. Even a seemingly simple change will
often lead to a chain reaction of other changes.

The WRSA, along with the Department
of Geography & Regional Development of the University of Arizona cohosted
the largest ever North American Meetings of the Regional Science Association
International, November 11 — 14, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. More than 400
regional science scholars from far and wide participated in the three days
of the 45th annual conference. The Final Program included a total of 84
paper sessions featuring 316 papers, along with a large number of panels
and council and business meetings. Sessions were held in two hotels, the
historic La Fonda and the lovely Hotel Loretto. Participants filled the
sleeping rooms of both those establishments to capacity, and two additional
official hotels were added to accommodate the overflow attendance.
Special events at the conference
included a large slate of invited-paper sessions organized in memory of
Ben Stevens, WRSA Board member Geoff Hewings’s Presidential Address,
the Annual NARSC Awards Banquet Luncheon with a speech by Ed Glaeser of
Harvard on the Future of Cities (not to mention WRSA’s own composer in
residence, Jean Paelinck’s, piano recital), and a high-spirited conference
supper party for all participants on Friday evening. Meeting-goers
took full advantage of the unique Santa Fe ambiance, enjoying its culinary
and scenic charms. After snow and cold weather in the early and mid-part
of the week, the skies cleared and the temperatures warmed up into the
60s on Friday and Saturday giving conference-goers a taste of the full
spectrum of early-winter in the Land of Enchantment.
The massive job of organizing the academic side of the
Meetings was expertly handled by Program Co-chairs adrian X. esparza and
Brigitte_Waldorf. The conference logistics were handled by Arrangements
Chair David a. Plane, assisted by Linda Koski and a merry band of grad
students from Arizona’s Department of Geography & Regional Development.
It is probably fair to brag that the two North American conferences co-hosted
by WRSA — the 1993 40th Annual Meetings at the Four Seasons Hotel in Houston)
and the 45th in Santa Fe — each set new standard.
