Following his election as President-elect last year,
Professor Jun Liu took office in March 2006 as President of TESOL,
the leading international association of ESL teachers with 13,500
members from 120 countries. He has the distinction of being the
first non-native English speaker to hold the position. In the
past year, Liu has traveled around the world as an
ambassador for TESOL and the University of Arizona,
giving plenary speeches to numerous national TESOL
organizations, from Turkey to Thailand, as well as his
native China. The UA is the only university with more
than one faculty member to have held this prestigious
position in the organization's 40-year history. Fellow faculty member in the English language/Linguistics Program Regents' Professor Muriel Saville-Troike was president in 1974. |
