Course Description:

We will explore stories and poems from the Hebrew Scriptures (TANAKH) and the Christian Testament in an attempt to understand some of the ways in which biblical ideas have helped to form the consciousness of Western human beings. We will deal with questions like: How do the creation myths in Genesis shape our beliefs about how the world came into being and how humans came to be in it? What does the Exodus narrative mean, not only to Jews, for whom it is the foundational story, but to all people struggling against oppression? What is the historical significance of the Gospel narratives about Jesus? As we study these and other stories in detail, we shall also attempt to understand how all of them are finally parts of one story, our story.
