OVERVIEW

In this course, students learn the basics of ancient Greek, begin reading major classical writers and are introduced to the culture and thought of the Greeks. There is no assumption that students enrolled in Greek 101 and/or 102 have studied Latin.

GOALS

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Translate basic Attic Greek sentences.
  • Identify and comprehend both simple and complex Greek constructions.
  • Recite Greek prose with confidence and polish.
  • Read short passages of continuous Greek prose successfully (with the help of a dictionary).

PREREQUISITES

None.

READINGS

The required texts are as follows:

  • M. Balme and G. Lawall, Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek. Book I. 2nd ed. Oxford UP USA, 2003.
  • G. Lawall, J. F. Johnson and L. Miraglia, Workbook I: Athenaze. An Introduction to Ancient Greek. 2nd ed. Oxford UP USA, 2003.
These books will be available in the bookstore, though you might want to try amazon, Barnes & Noble or abe Books (where you can probably find used copies for cheap). *Please make sure that you have the proper edition of these texts.*

Any additional reading assignments for this course will be provided to you in class or made available for download from this website as pdf files. To view/download them, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download available here).

If you plan to continue with Greek beyond the 102 level, you will eventually need to purchase Liddell and Scott's Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon (the so-called "Middle Liddell;" 7th edition: Oxford UP, 1959). Smaller (the "Little Liddell") and larger (the "Great Scott" - ha ha ha!) editions are also available. You will doubtless also eventually need a copy of Herbert W. Smyth's Greek Grammar (revised edition: Harvard UP, 1983), a must for thorough study of the language. The bookstore may have copies of both/one of these texts. If not, they are widely available online.

GRADING

Grading for the course will be based on the following breakdown:

  • Attendance/Participation (20%): How often you come to class and the quality and quantity of your participation in class discussions. I will not take attendance, but will keep an eye out for regular absences and will deduct points from those who choose to cut. It should be noted that perfect attendance does not guarantee a perfect attendance/ participation grade. I expect you to actively engage in class discussions. If you do not, your grade will suffer.

  • Homework (20%): Nightly homework assignments from the textbook. This will be collected at the beginning of class and corrected. You will have the opportunity in class to ask questions about homework assignments before handing them in. We will address any serious problems with homework assignments in class.
  • Quizzes (20%): Quizzes (generally no more than 5 minutes in length) will occur at least twice a week. These will cover form generation, translation and vocabulary. Buy some flash cards and start memorizing! Note: If you miss a quiz, you can make it up in my office before the next class session. Otherwise, it's a zero.
  • Hour Exams (20%, 10% each): There will be two hour exams in this course. They will occur on Thursday, September 25 and Thursday, October 23. The exams will cover all material read and discussed in the course over a specific period of time and will consist of identification and generation of forms, declension, conjugation and translation. Do not miss the exams.
  • Final Exam (20%): The final exam is scheduled for Friday, December 12 from 2–4 p.m. Do not miss it.

*Please note: It is Classics Department policy that all students enrolled in Greek 101 receive regular letter grades. That is, pass/fail grading is not available for Greek 101. If you have enrolled for Greek 101 pass/fail, you will be forced to change to regular (i.e., letter) grading.*

OTHER INFO

Surprise! Cheating is not allowed. If you cheat, and I find out, you will receive a grade of 0 for the assignment and other bad things will happen. (See the U of A's code of academic integrity.)

Office hours will be held whenever I am in my office. One can generally find me there between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., M–F. (A more detailed breakdown of when I will be available will be posted outside my office door.) You are also welcome and encouraged to make an appointment to meet with me. Call, email or holler.

COURSE SCHEDULE

What follows is a sketch outline of the Fall semester. Assignments are due on the dates specified. On most nights, you'll read a section of the textbook, prepare a reading in Greek, memorize and/or review a number of forms, practice vocabulary and do a number of written exercises.

Check this page often. Readings and assignments are subject to change. I'll try to give a heads-up in class if a major shake-up is imminent. I'll also try to have readings posted at least a week before the due date.
