1. Introduction

  • Explain the project’s goals and how the project directors worked with the women and communities. Mention how women were chosen and point out that the women serve as role models.

2. Forward (by guest writer—Helen Zia?)

  • Based on the interviews and a wider knowledge, addresses Southeast Asian American women in general: explain dual identities/multiple roles; mention gender tension and race tensions; address traditional behavior of Indochinese woman vs. American changes; talk about communities and influences, point out that these women are successful because they have the ability to balance their two cultures and have not forsaken either culture. And a look to the future.

3. Refugee Affairs Essay (by guest writer —Courtland Robinson?)

  • Immigration—explain why they came, when they came, who makes up these communities, where these refugees and immigrants resettled and why in those locations; make reference to patterns in U.S. immigration history
  • 3 maps (Southeast Asia, U.S., DC/MD/VA)
  • Photographs: pictures of women in their homeland, refugee camps, American communities (would need to obtain from outside sources)

4. Cambodian Community

A. Description of community, religion and special events (brief—guest writer: who?)

    Photographs/graphics:

    • Ground-breaking ceremony for the Silver Spring, Maryland Cambodian temple's new Bot. The Bot is the building used for the ordination of monks. Photographs of ground breaking and of the completed Bot.
    • Cambodian New Year celebration dance performance at T.J. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Photographs of dances.

B. 4 Women—each presented with a brief biography and quotes and 2-6 photographs of different sizes (at least one that is full page):

5. Lao Community

A. Description of community, religion and special events (brief—guest writer: who?)

  • Lao community members and guests come together each April to celebrate the Lao New Year. Members of the temple and friends bring food and other donations as offerings to the Buddhist monks. Sometimes traditional dances are also performed. Photographs of food, alter, monk, water cleansing ceremony, money offerings, chanting, children, new temple (8)

6. Thai Community

A. Description of community, religion and special events (brief—guest writer: who?)

    • Loy Khathong festival is presented by the Thai American Association on the National Mall near the Reflecting Pool each fall. The Loy Khathong ritual is a mixture of Hinduism and Buddhism devoted to paying respect to Mother River–whose waters sustain life. The community comes together to make khathongs and to set them adrift on the water in thanks.     • Thai New Year celebration at Wat Thai in Wheaton, Maryland: Buddhist blessings, food, dance by young Thai girls and boys. Photographs of outside alter with families of several generations making offerings and praying, monks inside chanting, dancers performing, food, herb, and notions stalls

7. Vietnamese Community

    • Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, was celebrated this year during February. In preparation for the holiday, community members came prepare food and flowers. Photographs: 2 young girls, flower vendor
    • Vietnamese Flag day, a memorial ceremony for the anniversary of the communist takeover of Vietnam (anti-communist government), took place at the Eden Center, a major Vietnamese shopping district in Arlington. Photographs of people with US and democratic Vietnamese flags (3), Vietnamese uniformed officers, speakers in Vietnamese traditional dress
    • Vietnamese Vía Ba ceremony, members of the Vietnamese, Thai, and Lao communities come together for a blessing ceremony in honor of the Confucius goddess Ba Chua-Xu Thanh-Mau. eople bring food, such as roast pig and rice cakes, flowers, and arrange the alter with these and a central painting of the goddess. Dances are performed, prayers said, and a meal is shared. Photographs of alter, drummer, prayers, community (5)
