Introduction
The
University of Arizona is
proud
to announce its 2019 Summer Study-in-Leipzig-Germany Program, an
intensive program in German language and culture. Students of any
area of study with a minimum of two semesters of college German are
eligible to apply. We will accept a maximum of 25 students. Applications will be reviewed continuously
until the program is filled.
The City of Leipzig Bursting with confidence and full of vitality, Leipzig is located in the central eastern part of Germany in the Free-State of Saxony. It has a population of over 500,000. The University of Leipzig, one of Germany’s pre-eminent seats of learning, was founded in 1409. Famous students include Leibniz, Lessing, Klopstock, and Goethe. You are invited to become part of the community of 30,000 German and 4000 international students during this summer program of study and travel.
Almost two decades after Germany’s re-unification, Leipzig has become a major center of higher education, research, culture, nightlife and shopping as well as a busy venue for trade fairs and conferences. The lovely old Renaissance and Baroque buildings, churches, historical trading centers, malls with restaurants and cafes are now fully restored and modernized, providing a stylish paradise for students, shoppers, and sightseers. High-class entertainment is assured – attractions for arts-lovers include the Gewandhaus concert hall, the Opera House, the St. Thomas Choir, cabarets, theaters, jazz cellars, the Drallewatsch pub district, numerous students' pubs and the Moritzbastei, Europe’s biggest students’ club (an underground vault with various bars, cafes, and dance floors).
Museum
and art lovers will enjoy
the
Museum der Bildenden Künste, the Museum
für
Kunsthandwerk, Museum in der Runden Ecke (exhibition: STASI -Power
and
Banality), the City History Museum, Bach Museum/Archives, Mendelssohn
House, Battle of the Nations monument and numerous art
galleries,
e.g., the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, ARTCO Galerie, Galerie
Leipziger Hof, Galerie Michael Beck & Eggeling.
GER 211: Intermediate Intensive German (6 units): Intensive practice of communication skills in German (listening, reading, speaking, and writing), systematic review of German grammar (equivalent to GER 201 and GER 202). Prerequisite: completion of two semesters of German study at college level or the equivalent. GER
392: Directed
Research in German Studies (6 units): Daily class meetings,
conversation, reading and writing, individual research and group
projects on topics in
German Studies (art, business, film, history, linguistics, music,
politics,
and sports). Prerequisite: completion of a minimum of four semesters of
German
study at college level or the equivalent. GER 492: Directed Research in German
Studies (6 units): Same as GER 392, but a more
extensive individual research project on a topic in German literature /
culture. Prerequisite: GER 392 of a previous Summer Study in Leipzig
Program.
The fee includes:

Three
kinds of scholarships* are available from the Department
of
German Studies: (1) the Weinel
Scholarship
for UA Majors of
German (download application form), (2)
the German
Studies Scholarship for UA
students
of all majors and minors (download
application form) and (3) the Deutscher
Studenten Club Study Abroad Scholarship. (download
application form). Deadline for these applications is December 5, but earlier submissions
are encouraged. Other
scholarships* are the SILLC Global
Award (click here)
(deadline in mid-February) and
the Werner Schirmer Memorial
Scholarship (click
here) (deadline in early March).
Travel
Scholarships* (ranging
from $150-500): Application forms can be requested

travel scholarships is March 15. Boren Scholarships for International
Study. Applications are available online at: BorenAwards.org. *Scholarship
funding is limited
and
the application pool is competitive. Only UA students are
eligible.
Priority:
December 15, 2018 We strongly recommend that
students apply by the priority deadline.  The
